On the night of the full moon, midway through the residency, I am kept awake thinking about the materials I have collected and their relationship to the village. I envision an ensemble of objects in one of the abandoned arch rooms—the one with the niches decorated with yellow-painted carvings. A man’s suit jacket hangs on a hook in the wall, the left arm embroidered with the lyrics to Hiawatha’s Vision by Johnny Cash. The niches are filled with the cleaned bones, they have been tied with pink plastic ribbons, pulled from the woven plastic bag. The skeletons of dead plants from the valley are painted “mecca blue” and placed in such a way that they appear to grow from cracks in the floor. A quiet dialogue ensues between the objects and the space, myself and the villagers, art and tradition.

From October 15th to November 15th, 2011 I was an artist in residence at the Babayan Culture House, situated in the region of Cappadocia in central Turkey. The residency consists of a multi-roomed cave-house located in the small farming village of Ibrahimpasha. Each year artists are invited to explore the village and its surrounding valleys, to intermingle and interact with the residents and to develop a visual or artistic response.

Ibrahimpasha and its people have arrived at a crossroads where an ancient way of life is giving way to westernized modern existence. I was fortunate to be in residence at a moment when it was possible to observe traces of the past, present and future realities of the village. For this reason, I felt that any work I made while in residence should acknowledge my dual perspective as insider and outsider; temporary village resident and western observer/cultural tourist. My process became a rhythm of observing and gathering traces of village life, transforming them through a series of simple manipulations and placing them back in the environment as a means of creating a dialogue between myself and the villagers. The installation I created has been left intact and will remain for future visitors to discover.

The project was created in collaboration with P'unk Ave.

During the exhibition, visitors exploring the grounds of the Center encountered a series of stations demarcated by site-specific arrangements of painted gourds. At each station the gourds prompted participants to use their cellphones to initiate a series of narrative text-messages. The messages layered local history and ecology with residual dialogue from project collaborators. This non-linear narrative could be pieced together to create a portrait of the Center as a living site that embodies the struggle between progress and preservation.
